The last time Otis Gibbs played Belfast was in the Black Box as part of the 2009 Open House Festival where he brought the audience to their feet - for a standing ovation. He was that good. Those that were there will probably remember that gig forever. The Duke & The King also made their Open House debut that Sunday afternoon. There really was something very special happening onstage that day, and it’s high time we had some more of those special happenings. So, ladies and gentlemen, will you therefore please put your hands together and welcome back to Belfast, the one and only Mr Otis Gibbs.
A seasoned troubadour, Gibbs hails from uber-cool East Nashville where he and his partner Amy Lashley run their independent record label, Wanamaker Recording Company. Never happier than when he’s singing about the common man, injustice or the environment, Otis’ sixth album, released earlier this year, maybe has a more personal feel. The title of this album, ‘Harder than Hammered Hell’ comes from a phrase he heard when working as a tree planter. A 70-year-old co-worker would describe ground that was tough to dig as “harder then hammered hell” and Gibbs has chosen this to describe the gritty folk tales found herein. Rather apt title then.
