Paul Simon first gained world wide recognition as the writing talent behind the popular American folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel formed with fellow musician Art Garfunkel.


When Simon & Garfunkel split in 1970, Simon quickly began his solo career with the release of the self-titled album, Paul Simon. This was followed by There Goes Rhymin’ Simon and Still Crazy After All These Years, both of which featured chart-topping hits such as Loves Me Like A Rock and Kodachrome.

In 1986 Simon released the immensely popular Graceland, which featured the groundbreaking use of African rhythms and performers Ladysmith Black Mambazo. In 1990, he followed up Graceland with the successor album The Rhythm of the Saints which featured Brazilian and Cajun musical themes. These albums helped to popularize world music as a genre.

Glam-pop sprite Patrick Wolf is ready to release his new album Lupercalia to the world, and now we've got all the details. Hideout Recordings will release the album through Mercury on May 30. Wolf produced the album himself, recording it in England, Spain, France, Los Angeles, and Germany. The LP features a few other musicians, as well as choral and string arrangements, but Wolf plays a tonne of the instruments featured on the album: viola, piano, dulcimer, guitar, ukulele, Moog, and timpani.

Patrick Wolf is an English singer-songwriter from London. Wolf mixes electronics and samples with a wide range of instruments including viola, keyboards, ukulele, and percussion, all of which he plays himself to form a fusion of jazz, folk and electronic music.

He began experimenting with sound and four-track recording at the age of 11, eventually building an arsenal of instruments that included junk-shop organs and a home-built theremin.

Decadent, pretentious and a self-confessed outsider, Patrick Wolf is the perfect pop star. Over four acclaimed albums he's embraced everything from folk and baroque pop to Berlin-influenced techno. Well, he's back with Time of My Life (not, unfortunately, a cover of the Dirty Dancing staple), the first single from his forthcoming album The Conqueror, due in May. The original is a sumptuous, string-drenched paean to strength in the face of heartbreak ("happy without you" is a recurring lyric), while this remix adds throbbing synths, crisp beats and spacious piano breaks. Welsh band Paper Aeroplanes are taking those words that you hear in your head and shooting them across the ether. The band have recently mixed tracks with John Reynolds (Sinead O’Conner, Andrea Corr, Indigo Girls) and are being compared to Rilo Kiley, Cranberries and Suzanne Vega.

Brooklyn kings of reinvention, Yeaysayer Who describe themselves as "Enya with Bounce") dish out the playful psychedelic pop on their second album, Odd Blood. It's an incredible sprawling, electro-heavy release from the three piece. Recorded in the state of New York during 2009,  Odd Blood received largely positive reviews from critics. Praise centered on its cohesive merging of genres, especially the pop-influenced rhythms.

Passion Pit's mode of operation on their debut album, Manners, appears to be to juxtapose the giddiest music possible with some truly dark and self-searching lyrics. It's a classic trick that will have you singing along happily to the sound of confusion, sadness, and the torment of one man's mind. You can dig below the sweet falsetto of vocalist/songwriter Michael Angelakos, the rollicking and joyful tunes, and the glittering, shiny surfaces that the group and producer Chris Zane painstakingly create and absorb the insights and feelings of Angelakos' words or not, because the record is satisfying either way -- especially if a record that combines Animal Collective's twee-est moments, Mercury Rev's most cotton-candied jams, the paisley-fied soul of Prince, and the synth pop hookiness of New Order sounds like a good idea to you.
