Music from Down Under!

So! The ARIA's (Australian Record Industry Association awards) are taking place this weekend, so taste some Australian ear candy! :)

Lisa Mitchell, finished 6th place on Australian Idol when she was only sixteen. Three years later she produced Wonder, a debut pop record that outshone the releases of the Idol contestants that she lost to. This year she’s nominated for Best Female Artist.

Check out this cool clip of Dan Sultan, John Butler and Missy Higgins performing a cover of Paul Kelly’s “From Little Things Big Things Grow.” The camera work is a little shaky, but worth sitting through.

Sia, is an Australian-born, NY-based singer-songwriter who blows my mind. This year she’s nominated for Best Female Artist, while her fifth studio album, We Are Born is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Independent Release.

Birds of Tokyo are one of the greatest alt-rock acts that Australia has produced in the last decade. They’re nominated for six (!) ARIA awards, including Best Album and Best Rock Album for their self-titled 3rd record, Birds Of Tokyo.

And because you can't mention Australian music without mentioning: MISSY HIGGINS....

The Book

This is quite interesting....." For thirty-six weeks, a sketchbook was sent in random order between four artists, two in Brooklyn, two in Belfast."

This will warm the cockles of your heart!

Meet FreddeGedde.

The only way I can explain how it feels to watch this is: you know that feeling you get when you come home from college and have your first dinner back home? That feeling you get in your mouth as you eat your favorite homemade meal after months of cafeteria fare? It’s like that, but in your brain and heart.

If you like this video. You should check this out.

Semi Precious Weapons

There is a thin line between awesome and annoying when it comes to cockiness. Mick Jagger, awesome. Kanye West, annoying. Semi Precious Weapons walk this thin line on their sophomore album, You Love You.

Let it not be said that Semi Precious Weapons’ singer Justin Tranter has a self-image problem. From everything he sings on You Love You, it seems he has quite a high opinion of himself. On “Semi Precious Weapons”, he sings “I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous/tell me something I don’t know”.

The group obviously has a splash of glam that you can only gain by touring for a year with Lady Gaga. But the most important aspect of their music is that it is catchy as hell. You have to hand it to Semi Precious Weapons, You Love You delivers some of the best braggadocio I have heard this year and somehow manages to not be annoying. Their album might not make history, but their songs surely should make some party mixtapes.

Defend The State Pension

Older & Bolder, an alliance of eight of the country's leading organisations representing and working with older people, has announced that it will be running a Nationwide lobby this weekend (November 4-6) to 'Defend the State Pension' and is urging people to join the campaign.

Older & Bolder's Project Director, Patricia Conboy, stated "It is clear that cutting Ireland's pension bill is very much 'on the table' in December's Budget so we need to make clear to the decision makers and the wider public what impact such a policy would have on older people. We are asking people to go to their local TDs clinics to discuss their concerns and to sign our petition either online or by calling our offices on 01 8783623."

Jay Brannan is a Texas born singer, actor, and songwriter. After finding homes all over the country to live in, and briefly attending University of Cincinnati’s acting school, he decided to plant his feet down in New York City.

Brannan was cast in 2003 for the movie Shortbus, directed by John Cameron Mitchell. He contributed the song Soda Shop to the film’s soundtrack, which he stated was his “first professionally recorded track”.

Relatively new to the music world, he has released several songs on iTunes and on his myspace page, has become extremely popular thanks to his YouTube profile, and has been keen on maintaining a self-produced, low-key website.

His songs hold many of the same universal themes other artists acclaim to, but with a more fresh, realistic, sometimes vulgar, understanding. This has made him a hero to other gay men and general audiences alike.

University Offers Class on Lady Gaga

Mathieu Deflem, a professor of sociology at the University of South Carolina, is offering a class on Lady Gaga:

The synopsis for the course reads: “The central objective is to unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga”.

Prof Deflem, 48, who has met the singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, on a number of occasions, said: “We’re going to look at Lady Gaga as a social event. Other people say that Gaga’s the new Madonna. I see it more like there’s people who have this very individual thing. Frank Zappa had it. Prince had it. Miles Davis had it. Jimi Hendrix had it. And Lady Gaga has it.

Aram strikes again!

I'm loving German artist Aram Bartholl 's new creation 'Dead Drops'.  He stuck five USB flash drives into walls around New York City and invited people to download from or upload content to them.

In the past he has filmed people living out their World of Warcraft characters, made a giant Google Maps marker, and placed CAPTCHAs in real life.
