Bon Iver of a Friday!

BON IVER "Holocene" from nabil elderkin on Vimeo.

Not so much a cone head.....

Squarehead is a 3 piece garage pop band from Dublin, Ireland. Squarehead’s music is upbeat and energetic, funky and retro; echoing the summery sounds of the surf pop scene from the 1960s.

“The surf pop influence came from Ruan really,” explains Roy. “He has played in so many pop and rock bands, and he has a really eclectic knowledge of music and the 1960s scene – he introduced us to a lot of that. His drumming kind of suits that stuff as well.

Influences range from The Beach Boys to The Wipers. They count Morrissey as a fan after he was spotted at their gig at the Workmans Club, Dublin in February.

You can stream their album from Bandcamp.

They play the Roisin Dubh, Galway on 16th September and The Workmans Club, 10 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2 on Sept 17th, both part of their album launch.

Pukkelpop in a bad way!

So the internet airwaves are a wash with news re: Pukkelpop. Seemingly a huge storm has battered the festival and resulted in a stage collapsing.

The Naked and Famous commented on their FB page 'Pukkelpop has been destroyed by the worst storm we have ever been in. Please everyone: help each other'.

Update: Jared Leto, frontman with 30 Seconds To Mars who were due perform tonight, wrote on his own Twitter feed: "FOUR STAGES DOWN - STILL RAINING + THUNDER IF YOU ARE HERE PLEASE BE SAFE.
"SERIOUS INJURIES AT THE FESTIVAL. MORE BAD WEATHER POSS HEADING THIS WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE AND CAUTION.
"PUKKELPOP UPDATE: Two confirmed dead. 40 at the hospital. Sending our thoughts and prayers."

Spooky!

19 year old singer-songwriter Marcus Gordon, AKA Spookyland, seems to have achieved a lot for his relatively young age – regular spots on national festivals, a solo tour of the east coast and critical acclaim pouring in from around the country. And it looks as though he’s at somewhat of a crossroads, having made the decision to flesh out Spookyland into a full band and let the bigger sound and collaboration guide the project into the next stage of its life.

But before he leaves the solo thing behind for good Spookyland has produced one more video for the track “Failures” from last year’s EP Killin’ One Bird With Two Stones. “Failures” was filmed entirely in Gordon’s bedroom and can be watched below:

Cookie Monster + Tom Waits Mashup

From the promising-sounding just-launched YouTube channel 'cookiewaits' comes this glorious meant-to-be-mashup featuring Cookie Monster singing Tom Waits’ “God’s Away on Business.”

The concoction’s creator says: "Tom Waits sometimes sounds eerily like Cookie Monster. Not that I mind! I happen to love Waits and his carnival barker’s growl! "

Chocolate for the ears

Lana Del Rey 24-year-old New York native may be a relative unknown who is yet to officially release any music but such is the emotional resonance of her velvety, dulcet tones I reckon you’ll be hearing much more from her in the months and years to come.

The Late Twos, are a lively five piece indie outfit from Belfast. They started out in September 2010 under the name of the Tonic Slags, staging their first gig at the Centre Spot (Belfast) to a capacity crowd of 200+. After the success of the first gig they haven't looked back, staging a number of gigs to capacity crowds around their hometown of Belfast.

It's been a busy 2011 so far for The Late Twos, with no shortage of attention. However it would be the recording of their debut EP "The Late Twos" in early July at Manor Park Studios, that has got people talking. The EP has had some impressive reviews from people in high places, including a contact in London who works alongside the well known Paul Weller.

Shortly after recording the EP, The Late Twos showcased their new material at Spring and Airbrake (Belfast) in August and left the stage to a standing ovation. The main priority now for The Late Twos is to get their music heard, wherever and however it may be.

Do you remember this?!?! Vintage!

Meet Aaron Biber....

Aaron Biber is an 89-year-old man from Tottenham who's been cutting hair for the past 41 years. And during last weekend's riots, his barbershop was destroyed.

And since he said he hasn't got insurance and he can't afford the repairs, the Internet stepped in and decided to give him a hand and help him rebuild.

I didn't realise this (single) existed

British folk musician Laura Marling is only 21, but she's been getting critical acclaim across the waters for the past three years. She's already put out two albums -- Alas, I Cannot Swim and I Speak Because I Can -- both of which were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Marling's style of folk is subtle, coming off in a more offhanded way that falls lightly on the years. But don't get us wrong -- her voice can pull you in like the best of 'em.

For her third album, A Creature I Don't Know -- which will be released Sept. 12 -- Marling plans to take her tour to cathedrals across the UK in October. Her first single off A Creature I Don't Know, "Sophia," even gets the cathedral treatment in her video.

Cute website

If your house was burning, what would you take with you? It's a conflict between what's practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.
