Little Red - Recommended by Darren

Little Red formed in Melbourne five years ago, when five friends—Adrian Beltrame (guitar/vocals), Dominic Byrne (vocals/guitar), Quang Dinh (vocals/bass), Taka Honda (drums) and Tom Hartney (vocals/keys)—came together to jam in Adrian's basement, united by a love of infectious hooks and good times.

Rather than stealing inspiration from the ‘book of cool’ this 5-piece cut to the chase in a pure style they jokingly refer to as ‘doo-wop punk’. They maintain almost exclusively iconic influences, from a palette of Springsteen, Radiohead, early Elvis, Dylan, Sam Cooke, Nick Cave, The Beatles, and Lou Reed, as well as the more obscure gospel and doo-wop references that become apparent from listening to their fierce vocal passion, delivering the beauty and tension of musical emotion in a ragged and raw expression.

Anaïs (uh-nay-is) Mitchell

Indie/Folk

Anaïs (uh-nay-is) Mitchell, is an singer-songwriter from Vermont, USA, who attended Middlebury College. Anaïs’ voice is akin to Cyndi Lauper’s & song-writing / delivery’s inspired by the confessional styling of artists such as Ani DiFranco.

A rare musician who is equally comfortable wielding an acoustic guitar alone onstage, sharing a disc’s worth of alt-country duets, or scripting a vast operatic journey into the underworld. She’s a fearless explorer, and her world just keeps getting larger.

"Anaïs sings of love among the ruins, coming of age to find yourself an outsider looking for the place you belong, finding other strangers along the way. Details … are offered like clues or keys to the reality all of us sense is imminent and eternal beneath the surfaces of things."
— Hugh Blumenfeld, Sing Out!

She plays Belfasts Open House Festival on 2nd June 2011. Tickets £12 incl. booking fees.

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding has just announced details of a special performance at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin on Tuesday 31st of May 2011.

You couldn't accuse Ellie Goulding of being obvious. She makes music that will appeal to lots of people, but it’s of the intriguing, curious kind. Described invariably as ‘electro-folk-acoustic-pop’ (or just ‘brilliant’ would suffice), her songs are soaked in an almost cinematic sensibility; the yearning lyrics and resolute refrain of debut single Under The Sheets, for instance, sound like a scene from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet, with ace lyrics like "We're under the sheets/ And you're killing me/ In our house of paper/ Your words all over me".

Ellie’s beautiful re-imagining of Elton John’s “Your Song” has cemented her status as one of the most exiting artists working in music today.

Tickets priced €28.00 inclusive of booking fee are on-sale Friday, 1st of April from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide and ticketmaster.ie.

Day 23 - A Song That You Want To Play At Your Wedding

Sure it wouldn't be a country wedding if this wasn't played! haha

Best news story of the day:

Willie Nelson, who was recently busted with six ounces of marijuana at a border stop in Sierra Blanca, received an unusual plea bargain offer from Hudspeth County attorney Kit Bramblett: No jail time and a small fine in exchange for performing “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” in court.

“It’s the judge’s decision whether or not to approve it, but that’s what I would offer,” Mr. Bramblett told The Big Bend Sentinel. “That’s the one I would request, and that would be his community service.”

Nelson has yet to comment on the offer.

He was a skater boy

I'd love to be able to skate, always have done. I've tried, I got my fingers caught in a door one St. Stephens night while balancing myself, and thought I was going to lose them, ever since then my skateboard has remained neatly in storage. Now I've got that fear you get as you get older, that, 'oh my god there's so many things that could happen me while doing that' fear.

Secretly, I wish I could do even a fraction, a smidgen, of what Kilian Martin does in this video.

The internet is a strange place.

Ponder

Do you know what I missed today, just for a second, while reading something online. That feeling, you know, the one you used to get when you were called to get up and write on the blackboard, explaining how you got your answer in maths class...or biology...or whatever.

Chris Lilley + HBO

Oh yes!! Chris Lilley’s got a new comedy series coming to HBO called Angry Boys. Can’t wait to see this! I’ve been a fan of Chris Lilley’s TV shows — Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes — and I have no doubt this is going to be absolutely hilarious.

I would post a video but all I can get is:

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.
Sorry about that.

Some days are better than others

I really like the poster for this film, and the film isn't too shabby either!

Sometimes The Stars

The new song from The Audreys, a band from Adelaide in Australia is 'Sometimes the Stars' and the video matches its ethereal beauty with elegance and charm. It tells the story of a lost girl who journeys through a dreamlike land – and her yearning to make a connection with this world.

Making twitter look good.

Austrlian born Lenka, who resides in the States now, is a television actress - turned ensemble musician, with Decoder Ring - later, turned solo singer-songwriter in 2008. Most famous worldwide for her song “The Show”, which has been used in numerous advertisements, most notably for Old Navy.

Her vocal stylings offer a juxtaposition of catchy pop and layered, complicated world music influences. This juxtaposing is of late current in the popular music, spreading through the internet. Similar layering exists in the music of the anti-folk Russian-born New York City-based musician Regina Spektor, or the French/Israeli/Tunesian tri-language singer-songwriter Yael Naim. Lenka’s eponymous album is the latest salvo in this ongoing process.

She was previously best known as the third host of a long-running childrens’ breakfast cartoon program Cheez TV in Australia, and has appeared in numerous Australian television serials.
