Introducing: Bastille
Formerly the moniker of singer/songwriter Dan Smith, in the past few months Bastille has grown into a fully fledged band with an incredible buzz around them at the moment due to the sheer quality of the music they are producing. It’s difficult not to find yourself falling slowly in love with it that little bit more. It’s not often that this late in the year a track truly captures your imagination and outshines the wealth of music which has been released so far, but this is so beautifully written and executed that it is impossible to resist.

The self-proclaimed "overweight lover" of hip-hop became one of rap's top hit-makers with wit and a positive vibe.
Andrew Weitz of William Morris Endeavour Entertainment confirmed the rapper's death in Los Angeles, without giving a cause of death or saying where he died. Mr Weitz declined to provide further details.

Colin Meloy has a voice from another time. So it’s not surprising that he finds inspiration in topics that have a mythical, long ago feeling to them. The singer and primary songwriter of Portland, Ore.-based band The Decemberists often tackles lonesome, literary folk-rock fables about everything from Chinese trapeze artists to mariners stuck in the belly of a whale. That old-fashioned feel is partly due to their accordion- and fiddle-laden arrangements and partly due to Meloy’s preference for dated words like “shanty” and “palanquin.” But it’s mostly the result of Meloy’s nasal, thin and remote voice that always sound as if he’s singing to us from deep in the past.
Earlier this year, the Decemberists released their sixth studio album The King Is Dead. And they’re already back with a follow-up EP aptly titled Long Live The King. Though it’s composed of six songs that didn’t make it onto The King Is Dead, that doesn’t mean they’re throwaways; the 10-song album was so compact that its trimmed fat could have easily been left on it.

Live Lounge update
The Live Lounge is in flying form of late! Last week we heard the Horrors cover Beyoncé (below) there and today Bombay Bicycle Club hit the studio to cover the buzz act of the moment, Lana Del Rey. They brought a giant marimba for “Video Games,” giving it a much more delicate take than the version we heard Friday.
“We hadn’t heard it until we started thinking of something to do for this, and then we were all just blown away,” said frontman Jack Steadman. “That’s my song of the year, I think.”
Listen to their take – which features Lucy Rose tackling some of the vocals – below. The Lounge also has performances by Noah and the Whale, Kasabian, and Coldplay coming up in the next couple weeks, so check back to see what they cover.

Some musical goodness from the Welsh lands
Kate McGill was born in Carmarthen, Wales on 10th of March 1990. She now lives in Plymouth, South West England, where she studied Theatre and Performance at the University of Plymouth for a year before dropping out to concentrate on her musical career.
Kate’s debut mini-album Replaced was released on the 26th of September 2011.
“YouTube has been and still is a massive part of my life, as it’s one of the main means of my original music reaching people globally. I’m incredibly lucky to have such supportive fans and subscribers who are willing to travel just about anywhere to see me play or pay any amount of money for a few songs on their laptops, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I’ve gained over 22,000 subscribers and over 4.5 million video views in just over a year, so it’s my intention to keep uploading my music to YouTube forever. I love it that much!”

Bert Jansch, Scottish folk legend and frontman of the immortal ’60s British folk revival group Pentangle, passed away early this morning in London following a long battle with lung cancer. He was 67. The extensive catalog of music he left behind is simple yet intricate, traditional yet fresh, achingly beautiful and absolutely a must-listen.
If you’re unfamiliar with Bert Jansch, you’ve probably heard his stuff through other people: one of his most famous recordings is a version of the Davy Graham tune ‘Angie,’ which was also covered by Simon & Garfunkel. His recording of ‘Blackwaterside,’ a reinterpretation of an old English folk song, inspired Jimmy Page to write Led Zeppelin’s very similar ‘Black Mountain Side.’ He influenced a ton of musicians including the aforementioned Simon & Garfunkel and Zep, but also more people you will have heard of and love, like Devendra Banhart, Nick Drake, Joanna Newsom, Graham Coxon from Blur, the list goes on forever.
Jansch’s music, tragically but appropriately enough, makes for the perfect fall soundtrack. Put him on during those long walks or drives while watching the leaves fall, curling up with that special someone while being really cliché and drinking cider and wearing sweaters (or nothing), or, if the longing of the season is getting to you, just put Jack Orion on, lie on the floor facing the ceiling and let the music absorb you.

Little Green Cars are a Dublin-based band made up of: Dylan Lynch, Donagh Seaver O’Leary, Stevie Appleby, Aoife Kelly, Utsav Lal, Adam O’Regan, Faye O’Rourke. They're signed to UK label Young & Lost Club who boast Noah & The Whale, Johnny Flynn, Young The Giant & Fixers on their books.
They’ve benefited greatly from production from David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything) and their sound draws from folk-rock which seems to draw inspiration, at a guess from artists like Local Natives, Mumford & Sons, Fleetwood Mac and Arcade Fire.

Good deed of the day, down under.
Brazilian art director Lucas Jatoba moved to Sydney at age 29 and has loved every minute of his time spent Down Under.
When he turned 30, Jatoba decided to celebrate by returning the favor, so he went around town giving 30 gifts to 30 strangers and filming their reactions.

The Rest
So I got an email, all the way from California, from a band, I've never heard of, but do you know what, they've got a GREAT sound! This is how it went:
"Hello GillyGilly, At the end of last winter, we thought we were a few weeks away from completing our latest album, SEESAW, until a hard drive “glitch” deleted every last piece of it.
After a few months of false starts and false hopes, SEESAW eventually found its way to the same company responsible for airplane black box recovery. Almost five months after the process began, we miraculously had our album back. I actually laughed hysterically for about ten minutes after getting the news, finally realizing how close we were to losing the album which we had spent nearly a year and a half assembling.
SEESAW will (we promise this time!) see the light of day in early 2012, but we've launched a double A-side ALWAYS ON MY MIND | THE LAST DAY (includes artwork of my grandfather in the 1940s) to tide everyone over. We’re also making it available for free at bandcamp until Halloween.
If you want to know any more information about the recording of SEESAW, photos, etc.... " check them out here
What a great idea!
The industrialist Andrew Carnegie used his vast fortune to build 2,509 libraries around the world. The people of Little Free Library would like to continue that philanthropic tradition and make it accessible for people without Carnegie’s wealth. So they sell birdhouse-sized libraries that you can fill with books that people in your neighborhood can read.

National Anthem Mashup
Grant Woolard is so patriotic, he sang the national anthems of six countries -and then mashed them up in this musical collage. It works surprisingly well! You’ll hear the anthems of Germany, Canada, France, the UK, Spain, and the US.

The World’s Response to 9/11 (10 year anniversary)
A decade ago this today, people all over the world stood shoulder-to-shoulder in mourning, solidarity, sympathy and friendship with the people of the United States. Here are a few of those international reactions, both organized and spontaneous, that occurred in the days following September 11, 2001.
In London, the Star Spangled Banner played during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, while traffic came to a standstill in The Mall nearby.
In Beijing, tens of thousands of people visited the U.S. Embassy, leaving flowers, cards, funeral wreaths and hand-written notes of condolence on the sidewalk out front.
In Moscow, women who spoke no English and had never been to the U.S. were captured on film sobbing in front of a makeshift tribute on a sidewalk, and every single church and monastery in Romania held a memorial prayer.
In the Middle East, both the Israeli president and the Palestinian leader condemned the attacks, and made a show of donating blood.
In Dublin, shops and pubs were closed during a national day of mourning, and people waited in a three-hour line to sign a book of condolences.
In India, children taped up signs that read, “This is an attack on all of us,”

Lots of love going on
Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists “without any hesitation” she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey.
On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band “GROUPLOVE” a year before it was officially formed.
Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes all over the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los Angeles GROUPLOVE was faced with the challenge of what to do now.
This is what happened:

Game of Thrones theme with lyrics
Karliene Reynolds and her collaborators at Cabinfever Production Studios inspired by the HBO series A Game of Thrones. Reynolds, with the assistance of Brian Horton, Lin Umstead, and Caleb Cox, created a new arrangement of the show’s theme song “You Win or You Die,” composed for the series by Ramin Djawadi, and added their own lyrics. Reynolds wrote the new lyrics and sang and performed piano on the arrangement. You can check out the video here below.
It’s a very lovely arrangement of the theme and the lyrics are very fitting given the show’s thematic elements. Strange, but I was expecting these lyrics to parody the show rather than honor it. Emotionally straightforward, sad, a bit hopeful at times, it’s an excellent video and a great tribute to a series that’s already shaping up to be another HBO classic.
