Some acoustic on a Monday...

Meet, Emma Davis, a London-born songwriter who moved to Australia in desperate need of sunshine. Armed with her guitar and a much-loved yellow beetle, she now wanders between Melbourne and Sydney with Mark Stevens (Crooked Fiddle Band) on double bass, and Nicola Ossher on drums. Personal stories and familiar thoughts find subtle melodies in Emma’s guitar and voice, which have gained kudos from Triple J and community radio.

She’s currently working hard with Brian Campeau to squeeze all her latest adventures and the musical touch of all her new friends onto a debut album to be finished by the end of the year.

Merry Christmas

I think its true to say that Christmas really does bring out the best in all of us. I am reminded of the movie Love Actually where there is a touching voice-over at the start.

At Christmas time we all think of our loved ones, especially when far away from home. Whether we will spend it in their company or be there in spirit, they will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts.

Wherever you are, I hope you have a safe and peaceful Christmas.

Merry Christmas

Kid gets books for Christmas...

A nice warming Chrimbo story

We too have have posted the video of Daniel Mustard, the homeless guy playing Radiohead's "Creep" on the Opie and Anthony radio show. It pretty soon became an Internet phenomenon, making over 1,7 million views. Looks like he's doing a lot better now, he's off the streets and he is singing professionally: with the help of the millions of fans he made on the Internet, he's got a record deal with Story Records.

Happy Christmas Eve

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool....

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are an electro pop band based in Camden, London, England. They are most known for their track ‘Dance the Way I Feel’ and the Armand van Helden remix included on several mixes over the summer of 2009.

The band first formed as a three piece in 2008 when late founding member Charles Haddon met up with other members Joe Hutchinson and Caan Capan. Anders Kallmark joined the band soon afterwards.

After a concert at Pukkelpop festival (Kiewit, Belgium), on Friday August 20th, 2010, the band’s frontman, Charles Haddon, committed suicide. Haddon climbed a telecommunications mast, just behind the main stage of the Pukkelpop festival, and threw himself to the car park below. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead later that night. The London three-piece were in Europe playing a number of festivals and were due to perform as part of Australia’s touring Parklife festival next month. They were also set to embark on a headline tour of the UK in October.

This band warmed up for La Roux when I saw her in The Academy earlier in the year.

It's and good day for Americas Military Forces!! :)

America’s gay and lesbian military personnel are today celebrating the over-turning of ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ (DADT), which banned homosexuals serving in the armed forces for the past 17 years.
In a surprising 65-31 vote at the weekend, the U.S Senate repealed the law, which introduced by Bill Clinton in 1993 as a semi-compromise to allow gay soldiers to serve in a military as long as their sexuality remained ‘undisclosed’.
President Obama wrote on Twitter: "By ending 'don't ask, don't tell', no longer will patriotic Americans be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love."
Serving gay soldiers were at risk of being outed by comrades, senior officers, spurned lovers, or accidentely on social networking sites and so far more than 13,000 have been dismissed since 1993.
Thankfully, gay soldiers who were forced out of the military will be now allowed to re-enlist.

Makes the Dáil look abit like heaven!

The members of the Ukrainian Parliament sure love a good fight.

Members of president Viktor Yanukovich's party stormed the parliament podium last night after supporters of Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the opposition, currently under investigation for acts of corruption, blocked it, protesting against the political repressions against her. According to reports, 5 members of the opposition were hospitalized.

A recommendation from Sinéad:

Kitty the Lion began life as the singer-songwriter Anna Meldrum, reared at the seaside on a diet of folk and pop. In this cub stage, Anna toured the open mics and small venues of Glasgow with her acoustic guitar, and sensible shoes because Glasgow is a wet city and cats hate water.

In the next few months and years, Anna was lucky enough to play lots of exciting gigs, including an appearance at Hydro Connect Festival, and a string of support slots with Duke Special. All this gigging led to her to meet many like-minded musicians, so in 2009 the cub grew up into a fully fledged LION, when Joe Rattray on upright bass and Nick Roan on drums were added to the line up. With the addition of these two, and the later recruitment of Sorren Maclean on guitar and Callum Wiseman on mandolin, Kitty the Lion’s sound was upgraded from a meagre mewling to an upbeat, folk-tinged roar.

Check out Fowl Mouth on their Myspace. I'm in love with it, or buy Kitty the Lion on iTunes.

Meet 19 year old, Yorkshire born, living in Suffolk, Ed Sheeran. He released his first EP of 5 songs in 2005 (The Orange Room EP), his first album with 13 songs in 2006 (Ed Sheeran), and his second album with 12 songs in 2007 (Want Some?).

Sinéad would like to hear some:

Plane Jane Automobile, formed in 2005, the Orlando based four piece have accumulated a loyal and strong fan base who have diligently supported the band every step of the way. As they continue selling out shows across the country, their debut album, The Collector, has been downloaded thousands of times. Their hit songs “Stones” and “Close My Eyes” were even licensed to Nokia and placed in over a million cellphones worldwide as the standard ringtone. With the music industry comparing PJA to the likes of U2 and Muse, members Duke Crider (vocals/guitar), Luis Mejia (guitar/vocals), Paul McCorkell (bass) and James Dickens (drums) have brought together their cultural heritage to form a sound that is both universal and unmistakable!

Two words.... Gay Rights.

A women’s soccer coach at Belmont University, in Tennessee, resigned yesterday following pressure from the administration after announcing she and her partner were pregnant.
Lisa Howe, who was at the university for six seasons, told her team that the athletics department had told her to resign or be terminated following the discussion of her partner’s pregnancy.
There are lots of news reports on the interweb, this is just one.

Vampire Weekend

Seeing as they are in part, to blame for my lingering visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, they deserve to be in the blog, again.

Not necessarily the best song to listen to if you haven't heard of Vampire Weekend, but most of their other videos have lots going on, which takes away from the song if you're a newbie. I highly recommend downloading some stuff from iTunes :)

Kim Taylor is a singer/songwriter from Ohio. She describes her genre as country/soul.

Kim Taylor’s third full-length record features nine easygoing tracks, showcasing her songwriting as much as her smooth, rich vocals. Recorded in The Maid’s Room in New York City and originally released digitally last year, Little Miracle takes a cue from balladeers like Elton John and Carole King with wistful, heartfelt lyrics and piano-driven melodies. A country-tinged organ lifts “American Child” past plaintive nostalgia, and a percussive backbeat makes “Do You Ever Feel Lonely” a hold-me-close dance tune; meanwhile, Taylor’s soothing vocals glide from earnestly hopeful to somber and restrained on the poignant “Lost and Found” and the haunted “Anchor Down.” It’s a perfect Sunday-morning soundtrack, but most of all, it’s the sound of a great talent slowly coming into her own. Six days that humbled Ireland

Album Dump

Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan - The Nashville Skyline Sessions
Yep, Dylan and Cash recorded material together back in 1969, but it is mostly dominated by the Man In Black.

Gregory And The Hawk - Leche
What is it about female singers with coy voices that catch my attention? Definitely like the direction Meredith went with this album.

I Am Oak - On Claws
Good foot-shuffling downtempo indie folk record. In the vein of Bon Iver.

I Blame Coco - The Constant

Interesting recording by Coco Sumner, daughter of one Bernard Sumner... aka Sting.
